September 17 1998 my beloved male Rubus died »
September 17 2003 my beloved Olivia suddenly and unexpected got acute sick.
The day after, she died in a terrible disease called AIHA, autoimmune hemolytic anemia. AIHA is a disorder in which the survival of red blood cells is shortened because the dog's immune system targets and destroys its own red blood cells. This type of immune dysfunction in which the host develops a reaction to and damages its own tissues is termed autoimmunity. In most cases, the dog's body will attempt to compensate for red blood cell loss by increasing production of new red blood cells. However, if red blood cell loss proceeds at a rate faster than the rate of replenishment, a condition of life-threatening anemia will develop.

In Olivias case the clinical course was severe and fatal. It all went very quick.
On Tuesday she was as bright and breezy as usual. She was playing and running in the forest with Panta as they always do. I didn't see any sign of illness at all.
But on Wednesday morning I notice that something was wrong. Olivia was very tired and weak. She had high fever. I did go to the veterinarian the same day. The vet took bloodtest and sent away for analysis. But we already suspect that it was AIHA. Olivia did get high doses of corticosteroids.
That night I was lying at the floor close to Olivia. She didn't sleep very much, she was very wheezy.
On the afternoon the next day we got the answer of the blood test. It was acute AIHA. Olivia was very ill. She didn't respons on the treatment. I was with her at the veterinary station the whole day. She got weaker and weaker. Her skin and mucus membranes got pallid and yellow. She couldn't stand up on her legs. She was just lying there looking at me with very sad eyes.
It was just so terrible.
Then, late in the evening on Thursday, half past ten, Olivia passed away.
There is no word for how I feel.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent. Her eager body quivers. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
